Historical account of Judendorf Strassengel

The pilgrimage church of Maria Straßengel bei Graz is one of the most important religious buildings of the High Gothic style in Austria. It is not only seen an architectural jewel. Also worth seeing are the valuable pieces of equipment such as glass windows and root cross. 650 years ago this important pilgrimage site was consecrated.

 
Who in Styria, on the Southern Railway, and runs a few miles north of Graz seen from car windows from the area who, on the A9, the Phyrnautobahn does so as a passenger out of the car, seen on a hill far from the jewel of a very large church, but is considered one of the most important religious buildings in High Gothic style in Austria: Maria Straßengel.

Eldest of pilgrimage.

In the Baroque period, the Anna chapel and a sacristy were added. For defensive purposes against the Turks was the Emperor Frederick III. Creating a wall in one of the church, which is still present.

Under Emperor Joseph II (reigned 1765 to 1790) the church should be demolished, but this was prevented by a petition of the four municipalities belonging to the diocese, which sent a deputation to the emperor. A memorial Scripture testifies to this.


Gothic hall church.
The church is an early example of a gothic church with three low choirs. The two outstanding works of art decorate gates, over the west portal is a tympanum with the Annunciation of Mary, the south portal presented in relief the "Lamentation of Christ".

Also of note are the stained glass. 147 rectangular plates are obtained, they are the largest single inventory of medieval stained glass. Some original windows are in museums. Shown are the glass windows of scenes from the Old Testament, Marian themes, angels, evangelists, apostles, saints.


The church has two towers, the octagonal, of tufa stone built factory, has three floors, located in the third, eight life-size stone figures, representing Mary and the seven angels of the Apocalypse. The octagonal tower built above the zone has the 17-meter tall stone helmet fitted with tracery, pierced.

Model for this building were probably the Albertine tract of Vienna and St. Stephen's south tower. Therefore the Strassengelbau popularly known as the little St. Stephen's Tower is named.

Madonna corn and root cross.
The high altar painting shows a delicate, girlish figure with a simple blue dress, which is dotted with golden ears: the Blessed Mother as Our Lady of corn. The 1430/1440 painted panel painting "Mary in Ahrenkleid" was stolen in 1976 and 1978 replaced by a copy of Judendorfer artist Gottfried Hoefler.

Cistercians as a pastor.
The place Straßengel called 860 as "strazinola", meaning "little perspective." He served at the time of the Slavic people living there as a military facility and therefore has nothing to do with an angel on the street.
